Giant Black Sea Bass

Prior to the 1950s large numbers of Giant Black Sea Bass could be found in the waters of Southern California, but as the population of the State increased and became more aware of the waters around them, most of these monster fish were fished out for their value as photographic trophies, since their meat is less than a delicacy. When California finally passed legislation to provide full and total protection to the species from any take whatsover by either commerfcial or sport fishers, they started to slowly make a comeback. The Bass you see here, found near Catalina Island, looked to be 5 and 6 feet long and must have weighed 300 to 400 pounds. The best thing was his basically friendly nature, which allowed divers to approach him to within 10 or 15 feet. An experience to remember!
