Based on projections from recent recreational catch estimates derived from the Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS), the Sport allocation of 84,330 pounds of cabezon for the calendar year 2002 will be taken by the closure date. The prohibition on the landings will be in effect throughout the State of California.

Based on MRFSS information to date the Department estimates that the approximately 68,000 pounds of cabezon were landed by sport anglers in California between January and June, 2002. This is a significant increase from 2001 landings during these same months, totaling 39,000 pounds. As cabezon landings historically increase considerably in the summer months, the Department is estimating that the recreational allocation will be reached in full by the specified closure date.

Commercial Cabezon Closure

Effective July 1, 2002, the commercial fishery for cabezon (Scorpaenichthys marmoratus) will be closed for 2002 or until further notice, pursuant to Section 52.10, Title 14, California Code of Regulations.

Based on projections from recent landing receipt information and dockside tabulation efforts, the commercial allocation of 94,398 pounds of cabezon for calendar year 2002 will be taken by the closure date. The prohibition of the commercial landing of this species will be in effect throughout the state.

Though the end of May, DFG estimates that approximately 68,000 pounds of commercial cabezon were landed in 2002. This is a marked increase from the 58,000 pounds landed during the same period in 2001. Historically, catch rates increase throughout the summer and fall. Consequently, DFG is estimating that the allocation will be reached in full by the specified closure date.

In May 2002, the Fish and Game Commission adopted regulations which provide authority to the DFG to close either or both recreational or commercial sectors of the sheephead, greenling and cabezon fisheries when their allowable harvest levels are projected to be reached. In past years, the Commission has taken action to close these fisheries.

Should commercial cabezon catches fall substantially below the defined allowable harvest levels, DFG may evaluate the potential of re-opening the fishery for a specified time later in the year.
